An attempt is made of accounting for the observed pairing energies in several light spherical and deformed nuclei by using a simple B.C.S. plus Hartree-Fock model. As for the single-particle model, an isotropic harmonic oscillator potential has been used for spherical nuclei, and an anisotropic one (Nilsson) for deformed nuclei. The basic interaction is assumed to be that of free nucleons, and two examples of the nucleon-nucleon potential are examined. The accuracy of the B.C.S. method for calculating the ground-state energy of the truncated Hamiltonian has been proved to be quite good; but the resulting values of the theoretical pairing energies do not in general agree with the observed values. It is suggested that the most important reason for this discrepancy is given by the effect of the residual interaction between the quasi-particles. One possible method of estimating this effect is indicated.
Multinomial logit models were performed following the stratifying procedures to assess the associations with background variables. The multinomial logit model assumed that the data were case specific; each independent variable had a single value for each case. The model with the most severe caries grade as the dependent variable included the whole sample, using the caries-free subjects as the base outcome, while for the two other models, only caries-affected subjects were included, using the subjects with the most prevalent caries scores and the greatest number of affected teeth as the base outcome. An interaction model (likelihood statistics) tested the possible effects of modifiers of several background variables on the dependent variables.
In this survey, caries distribution indicated a highly skewed figure with a large proportion of caries-free subjects, a small proportion of subjects with caries at the initial or moderate stage and a very large proportion of children with caries at extensive stages. A skewed distribution of the disease in young populations from Western countries indicates the actual caries figures [1, 2], and in Sardinia too [16], the prevalence of the disease was reported as quite low with a high percentage of caries-free children (64.5%).
A multinomial model in which caries-free subjects were used as the base outcome was used to evaluate the roles of diverse risk indicators able to change the status from caries-free to different caries stages. In subjects affected by initial caries, no variables played roles in the change of status, while in those with moderate caries, a low level of education of the mother and the intake of lactose-free milk as the primary dairy product were the covariates involved in the process. In children with the highest caries stage, maternal nationality outside the European Union and a low frequency of toothbrushing habits were involved. All of these findings emphasize the links between causal risk factors (intake of sugars and plaque) and socio-economic factors, mainly related to the mother (level of education and nationality).

For R users, open source means not reinventing the wheel every time a new problem arises. Instead they can search for packages to address specific analyses that others have written and made publically available on CRAN or through sources like GitHub 13 and Omegahat 14 . The open source nature not only means that primary R resources are freely available, but that the R community at large is also willing to provide troubleshooting support, as evidenced by the multiple independent support websites (e.g. Quick-R and Cookbook for R) and community forums that address user questions and problems (e.g. Stackoverflow and R-bloggers). Thus, this means that an average user has a diverse toolset to pull from, and an even larger support community to help them accomplish their task at hand.
